Memories of MacRitchie Photo Competition

Do you have a childhood or family picture with a treasured story at MacRitchie Reservoir?
Memories of MacRitchie aims to build up a collection of photos that depicts our fondest memories of the reservoir. Just send your photos with a caption and a short write-up of not more than 50 words, inclusive of the year/period in which the photo is taken.
The photos can be delivered via email to
memoriesofmacritchie@gmail.com, hand-delivered or mailed to (Memories of MacRitchie c/o National Youth Achievement Award Council. 5, Magazine Road, #03-03, Central Mall, Singapore 059571). Entries that have been hand-delivered or mailed could be either printed photos or softcopies saved onto a CD. There is no limit to the number of photos submitted and the images may be in full-colour, sepia, or black and white.
The deadline for entry submission is
30 September 2009 (Wednesday).
Please update the teachers and Yiting when you are entering the competition.

The competitions list had just been updated. A new set of list has also been uploaded: the interested participation and the confirmed paticipation. Please check that everything has been updated and if your name is not there, please approach Ms Guo to verify before updating Yiting.
Please also note that CCA records are keyed in based on the submitted entries that we received and not the interested participation. Those who have not participated in ANY competition, please commit yourselves to participate in at least one competition, preferably a photo competition before end October and inform the teachers and Yiting to update the lists.

Revolution of Science Photography Competition 2009

Below is a new photography competition which is open to all interested members.
The theme of this competition is “Revolution in Science”. Photographic subjects can be based on different aspects of science – Biology, Chemistry, Physics. Photographs can fall into any of these categories:
Action: Images that capture a scientific/technological process or event as it happens in the natural world
People: Images that communicate the impact of science, medicine and technology on people’s lives
Concepts: Images that demonstrate or explain a scientific/ technological concept
A maximum of
three (3) submissions is allowed per participant. Submissions may be in black & white or colour. A 60 word caption must accompany every photograph submission with full name, NRIC number, contact number and school name.
Digital files must be saved as Jpegs (.jpg format) with each image at least 3000 pixels wide for a horizontal image or at least 3000 pixels tall for a vertical image. All entries must NOT have been significantly altered by digital editing. Original work only.
All entries have to be submitted to Ms Guo in person via a thumbdrive with all your required information stated in a word document. Deadline for submission to Ms Guo is the last day of school/CCA
30 Oct 2009 (Friday).
Participants whose entries are short-listed for the final will be notified by 21 December 2009. All winners will be notified by 13 January 2010.
First prize is a Olympus Mju 550 camera worth $350. Second prize is cash $200. Third prize is cash $100.

More Competitions

All members please ensure that you have participated in at least one external competition this year. Participation in competition is defined as submission of entry in a competition. Please look at the list on the right column for competitions.
SDMA Competition is back again this year. It is one of the more well-recognised video competition among schools. Every school can only enter a maximum of 3 teams. Refer to the link for more details.
There is another photo competition - National Schools Photo-Art Competition. The theme is "Youth in Action". Only one photo entry per student and a maximum of 10 entried per school. Good to try. :)
All final competition entries need to be submitted to the teachers at least 14 working days before the deadline. All entries are encouraged to be submitted as early as possible so that there is time to fine tune your competition piece. Update Yiting and the teachers when your final entry has been submitted.

Spot & Shoot 2009 - Our Landscape

National Museum of Singapore is organising the above photography competition in conjunction with 'The Image of Our Landscape' exhibition for youths to bring focus to what Singapore means to them and their personal views of Singapore today.
The theme for the Student category is
'School - Landscapes'. You must capture images of the school. These may be images of iconic features of the school's history, heritage and/or landscape(s). You may borrow the club cameras for this competition.

Singapore Polytechnic Blogging Competition

Singapore Polytechnic, School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology is organizing a blogging competition from June to September 2009. This blogging competition aims to encourage our youth to create and publish digital media content on the web in celebration of the coming Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

National Animation Competition - N.E.mation! Season 4

The annual
NEmation Competition is back! No experience in animation techniques is required. All you need is a will to complete the project and submit the story ideas. Your 1-minute animation clip may be broadcast nationwide on TV!
This year's theme is "
Why I Care About Singapore". Details can be found at

14 August 2009. There is no limit to the number of teams (team of 3-4 students) each school may send. However, this competition is open to Singaporeans and Singapore PRs only.

New Photography Competitions

If you are thinking about which competition to join, the following Photography Competitions may interest you. The prizes are quite attractive too. Just take some time during the June holidays to practise your photography skills and capture the moment. Who knows you might win something!
What you need is a will to complete the entry, use a camera, take pictures that fulfill the theme and requirements, write a short description and submit your entry with the entry form to the teachers. X-Site Challenge 2009

X-Site Challenge is a digital design competition organised by Science Centre Singapore. The theme is
Earth Fast Forward.
Based on your imagination of the future Earth, each team (2-4 members) has to come out with a design and a written interpretation of not more than 500 words to illustrate and explain your idea. The design is to be done using
Flash animation of not more than 5 minutes.
Strongly encourage you to join you can apply the Flash skills that you have learnt in this competition. Of course it will also go into your Participations in your LEAPS.
Closing date for registration is

Submission of Free Media Design Competition 2009

15 May 2009 (Friday) 3pm.
Please submit the hardcopy of the entries (either video, audio clips, digital design in the form of CD or DVD) together with the entry form and the individual entry or group entry form. (Refer to the link under Competitions on the right side for the softcopy form.)
Label your entries clearly. Ensure that the rules and regulations are met before submission.

Young Enterpreneurship Challenge 2009

Young Enterpreneurship Challenge 2009 organised by Singapore Poly with MOE CPDD will be held on 11 June 2009 and 12 June 2009 (8 am - 5 pm). Students will go through a day of seminar on marketing, business plan writing etc and then a competition based on business plan submitted.
For students who are interested in business related courses after their O levels, this will be beneficial. Only upper sec students are eligble. Please sign up in teams of 5. For more details, look for Mr Andy Koh.

2009 National New Media Challenge

Dear all members,
Invitation to Participate in the National New Media Challenge
The Centre of Excellence for New Media at Innova Junior College is organising the annual National New Media Challenge for students interested in the use of new media for creative expression. In the course of this competition, we hope to promote new media literacy, foster creative talent and inculcate in students a sense of innovation and community involvement through the use of new media. The competition will take place from 10 April to 12 August 2009.
As part of the lead up to the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games, we are working with the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) to encourage participants in utilizing a range of new media disciplines to engage in active marketing and publicity for the Games through new media channels. Students will be constructing media-rich websites to promote the Olympic spirit, or the Olympic education being imparted in their schools.
The winners of the Challenge will be receiving attractive prizes such as Adobe software and Wacom hardware to further explore their creative potential. Additionally, the best websites will be featured and likely to be visited by youths all over the world. This is an amazing chance for students to showcase their creativity and talent on what is essentially a global platform.

Stand-down for CCA (Term 2)

Although officially all CCAs declare a halt in CCA activities for Term 2 by
17 Apr (Friday) for all to prepare for MYE, Infocomm Club still bears the responsibilities for delivering photographs and videos for all school events. Hence, all duties assigned need to be fulfilled, no matter CCA stand-down or not.
However these duties will be just limited to mainly morning assembly photo-taking for prize presentation every Tuesday and Thursday. Medium events such as Dialogue session and big events such as Speech Day will be made known to you very early so that you have sufficient time to arrange your own schedule and manage your time properly.
If there is an overload of duties or clash in your schedule, please let the teachers know so that we can rearrange the duties asap. Otherwise silence means all is well.
Please note that the
Infocomm Club Graduation Celebration will be held next Wednesday (
15 Apr) at
ITRR1 from
5pm to 6pm (that is after training). All thanks to Atika and her team of Sec 3s for planning and execution.
From now onwards, we will also be meeting in Computer Lab 2 on Fridays so that you have the time and the resources to do your competition preparations.
Thus, next Friday (17 Apr) will be held in Computer Lab 2 again for you to do your preparations for the competition before we halt for MYE. Those who are taking part in Reflections competition, please submit your work and the relevant forms to the teachers asap as the deadline is closing.
We will resume CCA after MYE. Please look out for the notices.

IP Champion Camp 2009 that will be held in ITE Tampines
9-11 June 8.30am to 5.30pm is only open to
Sec 3 Infocomm Club members. Those Sec 3 members who have not signed up for any competition yet, this is your chance (to make yourself useful)!
You will be educated on copyright, comic illustration skills and storyboarding techniques. Participants will also be pitting their comic illustration and creativity skills taught during the camp against one another to develop a comic strip as an IP educational material for their fellow students during the “Creative Comic Strip Competition” segment of the camp. More details can be found in the
link provided on the sidebar.

Some help for National iSports Media Challenge 2009

For those taking part in this competition, you and your team members might want to tune in to Channel 5 @ 7.30 p.m. every Wednesday to catch the programme "The School Nationals". It is a show of various schools taking part in various sports competition. You and your team members might want to take note of details like what exactly they capture and the way they go about capturing those moments. As for the interviewing part, I don't think it is being done in the show.Watching more news on tv might help a little. In any case, I hope you can gain something from such a productive show and make use of it to assist you and your teammates to do well in the competition. All the best for your competitions.

Competition Progress

In the midst of preparation for the competitions, please
READ THE JUDGING CRITERIA again and ensure that you (and your group)
ADHERE to the guidelines. Please fulfill the
THEME as closely as possible, be it the plot, the background music (including lyrics, tempo), the visual effects, the video or audio clips, the photographs, etc.
Please also ensure that you have acquired the permission from the respective owners for the music, photographs and video clips used. It is a serious matter if you fail to comply.
Before taking official photographs and video clips on the event day itself (especially big major events such as Learning Journey and Sports Carnival) using the respective equipment, do take test shots indoors and outdoors, get yourself
FAMILIARISED with the equipment
BEFORE THE EVENT DAY ITSELF. The event day is
NOT the time to get yourself trained on the equipment. You
SHOULD BE WELL-PREPARED and
READY!
If you seriously
DO NOT understand the equipment and its functions, seek help
EARLY from the seniors. Failing to perform your assigned task is a serious matter! We have
NOTHING to provide for that event, that is no photographs or video clips for the school newsletter, magazine, website, assembly screening, etc. Worst still, the photographs are over-exposed or out of focus and the video clips are unstable, jerky or the scenes are not even captured (such as a winning goal!). How embarassing the club (and YOU) will be in front of the entire school? Please take some initiative to
PRACTISE your photography and/or video-taking skills. The club cameras and camcorders can be loaned out for practice use (if there are no events requiring the equipment) so there should not be an excuse such as "I don't know.".
Hence, Ms Guo and Mrs Tan will be checking on your competition progress on
Wednesday 25 March. Please get ready to show us your ideas and your "masterpieces". If you haven't started, start

Sports Carnival 2009 AAR

Due to the early ending of the sports carnival, the video was not being done.However, I have noticed some flaws in the photos that were taken and some other areas.
Experienced members or trained members should be assigned the SLR instead of inexperienced members.This will make the whole process more smooth and I believe more precious shots could have been taken.For example, Celine.Even though she is not experienced, why wasn't she trained in the morning or before? And of course the seniors should not be blamed.She should have seek help from us maybe on wednesday or earlier.
This, is Sports Carnival, not some competition or leisure time where you take photos of your class, people, class photo or group photo! Even if you are to take shots of people, you should take them in action, playing sports[E.g. Catching the ball, throwing the frisbee].Not some big group of people walking or sitting there watching the match.You can take these shots, but they SHOULD NOT consist of MORE THAN 10% of all your photos.It will be even better if you can take more professional shots such that the photos that you take reflects the theme of the event [For this instance, "Respect the spirit of Sports"].
Basic camera skill : Focus your shot first before you take a picture.Although people are moving, you should still try to focus the shot before taking the shot.It will definitely be better than taking the shot without focusing first.
Although there was a time for you all to report back to let me upload the photo [11 am], you all should try to understand that neither me nor the iMac have super powers.Time is needed for uploading especially for the videos.Uploading time for videos is as long as the time of the length of the video taken.
Hope that you all will take note of the points mentioned and do a better job for the next event=D.

Sports Carnival 2009 - Equipment

Those who are unsure of what equipment you will be using tomorrow, please note the following:
SLRs: Celine and Shi Jie (After 2.30pm, either Atika or Grace will be using the SLR)
School's Digital Camera: Qian Ying and Richard
School's Camcorder: Hui Shi and Pratibha
Own Digital Camera: Ming Hui, Shabnam, Grace, Haiqal, Andy and Su Hao.
Those using your own digital camera, please ensure that there is enough battery power and data space required.
For those using the SLRs, school's Digital Camera or the school's Camcorder please report at the Infocomm Room by 6.45am tomorrow to draw out the equipment and get yourself familiarised with it if you have not done so.
EVERYONE on duty tomorrow (the names above) will have to report to the Infocomm Room by 7am tomorrow morning.
